In 2002, Simon Hunt spotted APEX as an emerging technology that could have great utility in the public sector and then worked with senior consultants from Oracle to establish it as a development stream. Simon has now been developing Oracle APEX applications in UK Defence for over 12 years on various projects and also held two roles as a lead developer. During that time, Simon has been responsible for the development and support of over 30 production APEX applications ranging from small work group user bases to full enterprise systems with user communities in excess of 10,000 registered users. Defence has generally been slow to adopt Agile, and Simon has been at the forefront of implementing working practices that succeed both in a public sector organization and with a 4GL framework such as APEX.
Perhaps Simon’s greatest achievement was in submitting an idea to the Defence Chief Information Officer (DCIO) Symposium 15 Hackathon. The entry was a working prototype of a data visualization system that paid tribute to fallen soldiers from WWI to present day. For his efforts, the team received the overall winner and subsequently awarded an Army commendation for his outstanding achievement.
Simon is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and in the final year of a part-time MSc in information capability management at Cranfield University. For his final-year dissertation, Simon is writing a thesis that examines the role of End User Computing (EUC) in Defence and how organizations can support EUC through the use of innovation environments based on web technologies such as APEX.

Glenn Schwartzberg has been an IT professional for over 30 years. Glenn started his career in IT (then MIS) working on IBM mainframes writing COBOL and CICS programs. He quickly worked his way up the food chain and as a manager had 15 people working for him. At this pivotal juncture, he decided he would rather be a technical resource than spend his time telling other people what to do and justify his life through paperwork. He entered the world of consulting, where he was a DBA on Teradata DBC1012 computers, programming, and maintaining databases. This was his introduction to SQL.
During his stint working on data warehouses, Glenn ran into a little program from Arbor Software called Essbase. It was a cool little program and Glenn immediately saw the value in allowing users to get their own data, so he started learning all he could about it. This was on version 3.11. As time and versions progressed, he learned more and more and the versions became more feature-rich and complicated. While Glenn did not like being a manager, he did feel it was important to assist others as they tried to figure out the issues they were having with the application. He joined bulletin boards and forums and was an ardent contributor, answering others’ questions, and gaining more knowledge. In 2008, due to his continued efforts to assist others and evangelize Essbase, he was honored with the title of Oracle ACE in Business Intelligence. In 2010, he was privileged to be named an Oracle ACE Director. He continues to share his knowledge of Essbase and its associated products though the Oracle EPM discussion forums, presentations at conferences, user group meetings, webcasts, and his blog. He was one of the founding members of the ODTUG Hyperion SIG Board.
