In 2002, Simon Hunt spotted APEX as an emerging technology that could have great utility in the public sector and then worked with senior consultants from Oracle to establish it as a development stream. Simon has now been developing Oracle APEX applications in UK Defence for over 12 years on various projects and also held two roles as a lead developer. During that time, Simon has been responsible for the development and support of over 30 production APEX applications ranging from small work group user bases to full enterprise systems with user communities in excess of 10,000 registered users. Defence has generally been slow to adopt Agile, and Simon has been at the forefront of implementing working practices that succeed both in a public sector organization and with a 4GL framework such as APEX.
Perhaps Simon’s greatest achievement was in submitting an idea to the Defence Chief Information Officer (DCIO) Symposium 15 Hackathon. The entry was a working prototype of a data visualization system that paid tribute to fallen soldiers from WWI to present day. For his efforts, the team received the overall winner and subsequently awarded an Army commendation for his outstanding achievement.
Simon is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology and in the final year of a part-time MSc in information capability management at Cranfield University. For his final-year dissertation, Simon is writing a thesis that examines the role of End User Computing (EUC) in Defence and how organizations can support EUC through the use of innovation environments based on web technologies such as APEX.
Simon has been a member of the UK Reserve Forces for over 20 years and currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in a Specialist IT Unit where he’s developed several APEX applications and trained other members of the unit in APEX.
